Olympic Spirit: Discussing theme

In movies, novels, short stories, and even short videos, a central idea is usually at the heart of the story.  The theme of a story is sometimes tough to determine because it is something you determine on your own rather than something you can find stated in the text.  The theme is a message about life or human nature that you take away from the story.

Think about the subject of this video and try to expand your thinking into a message about life.

What meaningful themes or life lessons can you pull from this video?  How can you use this message in your own life?

Please add your comments below after viewing the CBC Sports video from Feb. 11, 2014 in Sochi during the men's cross-country sprint semi-final.

I think that this video shows that Canada isn't just about winning at the Olympics. The Canadian coach didn't have to help the Russian skier. He wanted to so the Russian can finish in dignity. I'm surprised the the Russian coach didn't go out and help the skier.

This video shows courage the man didn't give up no matter what. The Canadian coach gave the Russian a ski so he could finish the race instead of watching him give up

Something that stood out to me was the fact that, even though he skier was from Russia, the Canadian still helped out. He didn't just say "his skii broke, oh well". He went out and put on a different skii for the Russian competitor.

I think the video shows that when somebody is struggling with something or fell in something you can still help them even when you don't know them at all.

I think that this video shows that people will always be there to help you and even if they don't know you they will still be there to help you.

I think that the Canadian coach knew that the Russian's ski would break so he followed him and when it brook he went on the track and replaced his ski with a new ski so he could finish the race.

I think that this video shows how friendly the countries are and how we put aside our differences for a competition. Although, it's actually quite curious how friendly we are in competitions, but not as friendly in the normal world.

This is what I took from this video. You have to finish what you have started. Just like when you play curling, you can not leave your team and think that it is okay, no you have to stick with it till the end.

This videos shows that even though there is no mercy during the Olympics, it's still a friendly competition, and people are always there to help. So whenever you're at your most competitive, remember that there are always people willing to give you a hand, at least that's what I think. - Carter L

I think this video is about being nice just to be nice. Even of it means you will lose a race or a game. This can be applied in everyday life by holding the door open for someone or helping around the house.

I think this video shows that you should always try to help someone know matter what country their from, and know matter what language they speak. I also think this video shows that once you have committed to something you have to do anything you can to finish it. ~Lachlan

It's always nice to help other people around you even if it comes down to helping a friend or even from a different country. Way to go Canada.

I think that this shows how sometimes it's not about the win but helping someone who needs it. Sports doesn't always have to be so competitive there still are kind people out there and it's nice that we were the country to help him finish with pride!

Even though the Olympics are a very competitive series of events, for a coach of an opposing team, to help a competitor that isn't even theirs is an inspiring thing to see. This coach didn't have to help him. But deciding to do so was a very heartwarming decision. The video shows that not only can you be competitive, you can also help out a fellow competitor in need.

I think this video shows that it doesn't matter who the person is you should help them. Even though he wasn't on the same team it's always nice to help out and it shows Canada cares about everyone.

This video shows the character and kindness of this Canadian coach. No matter how competitive the Olympics can get, you should always help another in need if you can.
