For example, during the Sochi Olympics, reporters are working around the clock to report the most up-to-date stories about the events as they are taking place. Reporter Tim Wharnsby of CBC Sports writes this news article titled Carey Price to start for Canada in quarter-final game.
Read this article as a writer. When we read something as a writer, we're looking at the piece through a different lens than we do when we read as a reader. We're trying to look at the writer's craft and techniques that we can hopefully apply in our own writing. We try to look at some of the choices the writer made and examine the effects those choices have on the reader. We want to examine the writing closely and try to understand how the piece was put together. We are reading to learn about writing.
Some questions to consider are:
- What do you notice about how Wharnsby organizes the article?
- What technique did he use to introduce his article?
- Where did Wharnsby get the ideas for his article? What kinds of sources would he have used?
- What different types of information are included in the article?
- Do you notice any writing techniques the author used? (figurative language, playful language, alliteration or other poetic techniques)
- Find a line/phrase that you enjoy. Quote that line and why it stood out to you.

In this article, the author broke it into three or four different sections. The first section started with the history of Carey Price's Olympic journey. In the 2010 Olympics, Price did not make the team. But now in the 2014 Olympics, he has his chance to shine. The author, has quotes from Carey Price, that where either from an interview or a televised interview. This allowed us to see what Carey Price was really thinking. The author also used so figurative language. We liked the simile "cool as a cucumber." Tis added some interest for the readers.
I like how the writer uses sub heading and writes everything in chronological order. He also uses a lot of quotes in the article. The writer uses a simily and says Outwardly, he's as cool as a cucumber.
I like how the article said "He's as cool as a cucumber." It is a really good simily for this article. I DON'T CARE IF MATT ALREADY USED THAT QUOTE ORION AND I WHERE TALKING ABOUT IT BEFORE WE SAW MATTS COMMENT!
We also liked how everything is in chronological order. This makes the article easier to follow.
I liked how the whole article wasn't all about Carey Price at the Olympics,it featured where he was in his career during the 2010 Olympics and they even interviewed the coaches for team canada to hear what they thought about how Carey Price was playing. The article was even broken up in to subheadings like his training and his career before the Olympics and before playing for the habs.
I like how in the article the whole thing wasn't just about Carey Price, they started to talk about what their options were for the goaltending and about different lines they were going to make. I like how the writer diecided to use the sentence "he's as cool as a cucumber," I'm not 100% sure what it means but it sure sounds cool to the reader. I liked one of the comments that one of the readers made down in the comment zone...he said "The gold medal could be yours....if the Price is right." I noticed that the writer of the article went and interviewed some people to get the information for his article. Such as Carey Price. I like how in the article he didn't use boring, old words. He spiced it up by using sentences like "he's cool as a cucumber," etc. I noticed that the writer had a main subject of Carey Price/Canadian Olympic. Hockey Team and he had a few sub topics. One if the sub topics were about how they are changing up the lines a bit. Overall, I liked this article
Wharnsby organized this article by starting it off with the beginning of his carrear and to where he is now. It started off with what he would do in his spare time, four years ago. Then he shows what he's really doing now, preparing for the Olympics. He probably got the ideas other writers and he probably got sources online or he talked to Carey Price about it. There is many types of information in it. How he's feeling in the games during the Olympics, his nhl team that he's on, and how he worked up to get to the Olympics. He used actual quotes from the player himself and his coach. He also used a playful language when he said 'cool as a cucumber'. Something that stood out to us was when he said that whenever something comes in front of him as a challenge, he will take it and he will do whatever he can to achieve that goal. It stood out us because we thought it was very inspirational.

Wharnsby makes a lot of great points when he writes about Price and the Olympics. He makes a good introduction about how Price went from sitting by the river to starting in the quarterfinal for Team Canada.
He also broke up his writing, and adding some more things, like Price's game in Montreal, his goalie coach Stephaine Waite, and some more points about the team, like coach Babcock shaking up the lines once again, which was an interesting addition.
Wharnsby gets some information from an interview with Price, where he learns about his experiences on the Canadiens, and how he improved his game. In my opinion, my favourite line was, "Winning an Olympic gold medal is as important to Price as hoisting the Stanley Cup one day with the Habs."
Overall, Mr. Wharnsby uses an interesting writing strategy here, and it taught a lot about Carey Price and his Olympic run.
I noticed that wharmsby found out who's Crosby was and then went into his career so someone whom didn't known anything about him they could find out more about how he got into his job.
He used the dates of when things were happening and important events to get him where he is today
What teams he's played on, quotes he's Carry, and people he has played with.
I noticed that Wharnsby first told us who Crosby was and then went into his career so someone whom didn't know who he was would learn more about what he does and how he got into his job. He used dates of important events that happened to get him were he is today. They have included what teams he's played on, quotes from carry, and people he has played with.
We enjoyed they fact that they talked about the options for the goaltending. He divided up the article with captions and used small paragraphs to keep are attention. He used exalent quotes to help the articles flow.
The writer wrote in like a past and present to tell you about when he first started in the NHL and after a few years of playing as a goile in the big leages. We found the the writer use chronllogical order to write this artical.

I like how to writer didn't only interview Carey price but also interviewed his coach and teammates too. I liked how to paragraphs were shirt and quick. I also liked how they explained about his life before the olympics
Flash back showing where Crosby was last Olympic fishing and this Olympic he is in net for our team.
Here is a line I took from it "if you start looking at long term goal you do not give the things in front of you your full attention." I belive that what is in front of you should have your full attention so you can get through anything.
I think that the way the article was organized was very neat. I'm glad he chose to write a small paragraph telling us about Carey Price's life before playing for Team Canada and what he was/is interested in. I did notice that the author had used quite a few writing techniques in this post. I'm not sure where he got all his information, but it seems like all the quotes he had gotten from Carey or his coach. "But at this point in my career, I’m happy with the way things are going and I know what I need to focus on." I really like this quote that Price said because it shows how he has tried his best and he knows it.
We really liked the beginning. It was a neat way to open the story and gave us some background information about Carey, and the Olympics.
Tim Wharnsby broke the article into three sections which made it easier to read.
Adding quotes, pictures, and facts to the writing made it more interesting and added depth.
Also, adding similes, metaphors and personification makes your writing more exciting for example, Tim wrote "Carey is as cool as a cucumber."
As well, Tim put his own personal opinions on the Canadian team and Carey Price which was fun to read.
Overall, we think Tim did a very good job on this article and kept the readers attention.
This article was well organized we could follow what was goin on with the article. He started off the article by telling the readers about Price's dream to get a gold for Canada. Wharnsbys probably a notebook/recoder to get his information from Carey price. They talked about the technique for team Canada. "Four years ago, Carey Price went ice fishing near his hometown of anahim lake, b.c., caught a couple rainbow trout and them settled in to watch Sidney Crosby put the entire country in a euphoric state with his golden goal" this stood out to me and josh because it told us what he was doing during the time that he wanted to become a player for team Canada.
